WEIRD NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD

1. Nigeria (Candlelight)


When it comes to strange New year traditions, Nigerians are the first.
On the 31st evening most people will be seen as the church auditorium in fact every Nigerian is a born again Christian. You will see them buying candles in packs and taking it to the church for prayers.
the rationale is that the candle is the light that will shower them into the new year. and the Second strange thing is that when they lights up the candle they will write all the petitions and prayer request on a sheet of paper  and pray while the candle stick is still burning and wax off. So strange indeed.

2. Lead Pouring (Germany & Austria)

When it comes to strange New Year traditions, or any other traditions, Germans and Austrians are true champions. “Lead pouring” is an old tradition which include using molten lead like tea leaves. The lead pieces are poured into a bowl full of water. The lead forms some shape in it and predicts what’s going to happen in next year. For example, the ball means luck all over the year, an anchor means eventual need of help, while the cross means death.
3. Burning Portraits (Ecuador)

It isn’t pleasant when you’ll see someone’s picture burning, but in Ecuador that’s real fiesta. The locals gather together with pictures that represent something from the last year and burn it. That’s the way they rid of the past. On the New Year’s Eve the night in Ecuador is enlightened by all these fires throughout the country.
4.Graveyard Visit (Chile)

In Chilean city of Talca people take participation on a mass on the New Year’s Eve. When it’s over, they all go to the graveyard, set up their chairs and wait for the New Year with the deceased. That’s how a man could celebrate the New Year’s Eve forever.
5. Throwing Dishes (Denmark)
Maybe it wouldn’t be pleasant if you find thrown dishes on your doorstep in the morning, but if you’re in Denmark things look different. People there use to keep the old dishes throughout the whole year. The purpose: they throw it on their friends’ doors on New Year’s Eve. So, they don’t think that someone hates them when they find the dishes on January 1st, but they know that they have many friends.
6. Diving (Siberia)
This by far is the wackiest traditions out there. Head over to Lake Baikal in southeast of Siberia to experience a new year that’s not for the faint hearted. The lake is known to be one of the deepest and oldest freshwater lakes. The temperature goes as low as -20 degrees, and you’ll really be left with the chills!

9. Fireballs (Scotland)
The Hogmanay Festival is a New Year celebration with a dash of Scottish flair. Men parade through the streets holding blazing balls of fire. They continuously swing these balls over their heads.  According the the locals, the balls of fire bring purification and sunshine. This celebration dates back as far as the Vikings.
10. Mistletoe (Ireland)
The single women of Ireland wait desperately for the New Year’s night because it is the night that can bring them the love of their life. They place mistletoe leaves under their pillow hoping to catch their future husband. It is also believed in Irish culture that it helps them get rid of bad luck.
11. Talking to Spirits (Mexico)
Talk to the spirits are beliefs for the people of Mexico, and New Year’s Eve is believed as the best time to communicate with the spirits to get messages or clues about the future.
