Another bombastic statement by the Nigerian Army

After several months of unnecessary denials, the Goodluck Jonathan administration has finally admitted to what many have known all along: Nigeria is at war! On Friday,February 28, 2014, the President Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, admitted to Channels Television that, “We are dealing with a very, very serious enemy…We are engaged in a war that has been internationalised.” But in
the same breath, he deluded himself by saying “We are in the dying phase of this insurgency.”

Boko Haram is an enemy unlike any the country has ever faced. This motley crew is not only a nuisance; it is a bloody nuisance that has been giving the Nigerian Army bloody noses and black eyes whenever it feels like it. What
should the lion do when flies jab at its festering wound? It takes a lot of intelligence, ingenuity and unconventional
thinking to make such problems go away. Challenges and problems are a part of the human experience. However, how one or how a nation-state tackles such problems says a lot about the quality of its leadership and its institutions.

After Air Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh was appointed Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff on January 20, 2014, he spoke with bravado, with a swagger. He bragged about asphyxiating and chopping off Boko Haram’s head within days. The PUNCH newspaper quoted him as saying the
military would bring the ongoing carnage and mayhem “to an end before April this year in order to prevent a constitutional problem in the polity.” I knew this was not at all possible. I knew it was an empty promise.
