Health: 6 Ways to Keep Your Breasts Healthy

October is the Breast Cancer Awareness month which is an annual campaign to increase the awareness of breast cancer.  Most of us are aware of the disease but don’t know how to keep our breasts healthy and protect ourselves from it. Breast cancer affects young people lesser than it affects older people but when it does affect young people, there’s every chance that it can be more aggressive. These are some ways you can keep your breasts healthy and prevent the disease;

  1. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight is generally bad for the health but it also increases your chances of getting the disease and lowers your chances of surviving the disease too.
  2. Exercise regularly: Regular exercise helps improve immune system, ward off obesity and lowers the level of estrogen and insulin in our body which may help prevent the disease. We should endeavor to exercise for 45 minutes to 60 minutes five days a week. 
  3. Drink less alcohol: Recent studies have shown that drinking as much as two glasses of alcohol a day can increase your level of having breast cancer by 21%. We should take fresh grapes instead as the resveratrol found on the skin of grapes can lower your estrogen level which in turn lowers your chances of getting the disease. 
  4. Go green: Vegetables such as broccoli and kale contain sulforaphane which is believed to prevent the multiplication of cancer cells, eating them raw has been shown to be more effective. Also, the low fat diet puts you at less risk. 
  5. Know your family history: Most cases of breast cancer are hereditary, so knowledge about your family tree will help you know if you are at risk and enable you take necessary precaution.
  6. Go for screening: All women should have a clinical breast examination at least every three years and annual exams and mammograms starting at age 40. Women with a family history should begin screening 10 years prior to the family member’s age of diagnosis.
