McGregor had been written off before the fight, but the Irishman surprised many of his critics with a largely professional display, taking the fight to 10 rounds.
He got off to a flying start, throwing a series of punches at the 40-year-old and scoring a few early points.  Displaying some theatrics, the Irishman even put his hands behind his back at one stage.
As the first round wore on, Mayweather went on the offensive but failed to connect and it was the Irishman who was ahead as the bell rung.
In the second round, McGregor continued the assault and easily held his own against the undefeated Mayweather.

McGregor received a warning in the third round as he illegally connected with Mayweather on the top of the head. Despite the breaches, it was a largely controlled, professional display from the MMA fighter.
Mayweather, meanwhile, struggled to stamp his authority on the contest, receiving blows to the head and failing to make an impact on the 29-year-old opponent.
The American found himself against the ropes early in the fourth round as McGregor went on the attack. Despite apparently trailing the Irishman, Mayweather had time for a wink to the cameras in a show of confidence.

But Mayweather is known to be patient and started to find his groove in the fifth round.  Pushing the Irishman back, Mayweather landed a number of blows to the body and his pressure started to pay off in the sixth as the Irishman seemed to tire.
In the seventh, he finally started exerting serious pressure on McGregor, getting him on the ropes and landing a hard left hook.
In the eighth, Mayweather maintained the pressure but McGregor remained defiant, landing some shots of his own.

McGregor got Mayweather on the ropes early in the ninth, but Mayweather battered McGregor with a hard right. With the Irishman clearly tiring and with his legs wobbling, Mayweather moved in for the kill but the Irishman survived the round.
The American finished McGregor off in the 10th round, with the referee stepping in to stop the fight.

The official scorecard

McGregor started well, but Mayweather showed his quality to come through.

Mayweather retires again

The 40-year-old said afterwards the fight would be his last, before thanking his 'dance partner' McGregor.
"He is a tough competitor and I thought we gave the fans what they wanted to see.
"He is a lot better than I thought he was, he used different angles and was a tough competitor but I was the better man tonight.
"Our game-plan was to take our time, let him shoot all his heavy shots early on and then take him down at the end, down the stretch.
"We know in the MMA he fights 25 minutes real hard and after that he starts to slow down.
"I guaranteed this fight wouldn't go the distance. A win is a win."

McGregor feels he could have gone on

The fight should have gone on, according to McGregor
"I took the early rounds fairly handy," he said. "I thought it was close, I thought the stoppage was a bit early, there was a lot on the line and I thought he should have let me carry on.
"I was just a little fatigued. He is composed and you have got to give it to him.
"I thought it was close. I get a little wobbly when I'm tired, it is fatigue, the referee could have let it keep going, let the man put me down. I am clear headed.
"Where were the final two rounds? Let me wobble to the corner and make him put me down.
"I've been strangled on live TV and came back. When you're in here in the squared circle, everything is different."

Gareth A Davies delivers his fight verdict

Brilliant, valiant effort by McGregor. After two lefts on the ropes, referee Robert Byrd has seen enough, protects McG and waves it off.

Froch's thoughts on the fight

Carl Froch admitted he was on the edge of his seat but believes Floyd Mayweather "outclassed" Conor McGregor in their light-middleweight fight in Las Vegas.
Mayweather took his record to 50-0 by stopping Irishman McGregor, who was making his professional boxing debut at the T-Mobile Arena, in the 10th round.
Four-time world super-middleweight champion Froch praised the UFC star's resilience but the 40-year-old was not surprised by the result.

Froch, speaking on Sky Sports Box Office, said: "He (McGregor) did well from the fact that he's a mixed martial artist. If that was a boxer, you'd say it was an outclassed job, a mismatch.

"In reality, he (Mayweather) was in there with a UFC fighter. Conor came, he was proud, he tried, he didn't go over.
"It was a great event, promotion, a good show, we've all been on the edge of our seats. But what happened is what we thought would happen."

The post-fight press conference is underway

Floyd Mayweather speaks, paying tribute to UFC chief Dana White.
"I will be remembered as a winner," he said.
And on why he didn't spar fully in the build-up: "I wanted my hands to be 100% for the fight. I wanted my hands to be solid."
You can watch above.
6:03am

McGregor speaks

I turned him into a Mexican. What can I say, I had a bit of fun over this side. I thought it was close. I get a bit wobbly when I'm tired. there was a lot on the line and I should have been allowed to continue. Early on I was handy enough. He was composed, fifty pro fights will give you that. I've been strangled on live TV and let it go. But f--- it, it was a great buzz. The man should have let me go, let the man put me down. It was fatigue and I get wobbly. Let me wobble back to my corner. You've got to put me down. Happy to perform for a different crowd and to be here draped in the flag.
6:00am

Mayweather speaks

“[Conor]’s a tough competitor - we gave the fans what they wanted to see. “He’s a lot better than I thought he was ... he used different angles. But I was the better man ... It was our gameplan to take our time and take him out down the stretch. That was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner. Conor you were a great dance partner tonight.”

Gareth's snap verdict on the finish

.. And it's over. Hard concussive, accurate punches rain in from Mayweather who is hurting McGregor who stumbles across the ring and into the ropes from a right hand, off balance, and is close to going down. The attack continues. Left. Right. Left. McGregor's head is torqued across his shoulders. This is nasty dominance now and Mayweather looks the great boxer and McGregor the MMA fighter. Brilliant, valiant effort by McGregor. After two lefts on the ropes, referee Robert Byrd has seen enough, protects McG and waves it off.
5:54am

Mayweather wins by TKO in the 10th

He could no longer defend himself and the referee had to end it. Mayweather was hitting him at will, walking towards him, cutting off his space and left him with nowhere to go. He stayed on his feet  but his legs had gone  and his arms must have felt like lead.

5:51am

Round 10

McGregor is taking too much punishment and the referee steps in. It's over. Mayweather goes 50-0!
Gareth on round nine Massive round and it could be close to the end unless McG rallies strongly. Good right from Floyd. And another. And another. McG holds. Legs are tired. Big assault now from Mayweather, looking for the uppercut to finish thew fight. McG, dives in to hold. Exhausted Ref Robert Byrd pushes them apart, McG is exhausted. Huge round for Mayweather. Mayweather 10-9
5:50am

Round nine

Mayweather is hit with a body shot that he claims was low. He takes a step backwards now but regroups and targets McGregor's face. His legs are wobbling. This is close to the end now. McGregor is being tagged and falls into the ropes. He's flailing around. Mayweather is looking for the artistic finish. McGregor is spent and is being repeatedly hit with rights to the face. He's got an iron chin but he looks absolutely knackered.
Gareth on round eight Good round for Mystic Mac he just landed more. Not hard, not dangerous but just landed more. The Irishman has rallied and believes in himself. It was a close round though. McGregor 10-9
 5:46am

Round eight

It's his first fight. He won the first two rounds or was allowed to as Mayweather surveyed the danger, but McGregor has now punched himself out. Mayweather is having the tie of his life, walking forward, cutting off the ring, throwing and landing punches at will.

Gareth's round seven verdict Series of big right hands from Floyd who looks like he is seeking a finish now. He rocks McGregor's head back twice. May also lands good right. McG so focused though and his will keeping him in there looking for a chance. But Mac v tired. Mayweather 10-9.

5:41am

Round seven

Better from McGregor circling round Mayweather but his shots have no force. Now it's time for the schooling, hitting him repeatedly with rights into the hip, stomach and face. McGregor is bleeding from the mouth. Carl Froch says he isn't at all impressed by McGregor and expected a lot more.
Gareth on round six May really switched it up that round and was more aggressive than he is accustomed to be. McG finding it hard in there but enjoying the challenge. Looks to be tiring. Cheeky tongue from Mac, and hands behind back. May starting to control. Fight even. Mayweather 10-9

5:38am

Round six

Mayweather is on the way forward all the time now virtually, upping the power with a burst of body shots to the ribs. McGregor is having to improvise. In truth it's all improvisation. McGregor is sitting behind the jab but his chin is up and vulnerable and he is not landing anything significant on Mayweather. He did turn round and McGregor slapped him round the back of the head but the ref stopped that intrelude quickly.

Gareth on round five McG still working hard but May goes top his stomach again and then a right from the American. They tie up. McG is so much bigger. Left-right from McG but not power. Body again from Floyd then that use of elbows he does in the clinch. Fast right from May. May holds glove over, McG flips him off. Crowd loves it. Mayweather 10-9

5:34am

Round five

Mayweather is clearly enjoying himself, flashing a wink at Carl Froch at ringside. McGregor looks exhausted and Froch says his punches now lack power. Mayweather unleashes a right straight to the cranium then they exchange body shots . Mayweather gives him a shove after the bell to move him out of the way.
Gareth on round four Weird so far from Mayweather. But he's opened up a bit more this round and although he's landing he's also getting caught. Good shot on McGregor's body. Twice. McG is game though. Good left from McG and crowd goes with him. May weather warned up now but he does look old. Mayweather 10-9.
5:31am

Round four

McGregor ramps it up at the beginning of the round again but Mayweather is the master of not getting tagged. He begins to take over, smashing a couple of right hands into McGregor's chin and kidneys. Those vicious body shots are taking a toll on McGregor who is going forward consistently now for the first time in years. He whips a sidewinder of a right hand into McGregor's face and hits him with a left cross. he takes one himself but a  great round for the undefeated former champ.

Gareth on round 3 McGregor unorthodox movement from MMA  making safety first Mayweather unsure what to do yet. He's just waiting. McG beginning to blow a little. McGregor 10-9

5:25am

Round three

McGregor is looking for the uppercut and the left hook but is not averse to the cuff round the back of the head. Mayweather's timing is not right yet but he is hitting McGregor with body shots and McGregor's mouth is wide open and he is breathing heavily.
Gareth on round two Mayweather doing little apart from one body shot, McGregor the aggressor warned for back of head punching. But doing all the work. McGregor 10-9

5:21am

Round two

McGregor again starts on the front foot backing Maywaether into the corner until he forces his way out. It's very cagey so far, no pun intended. McGregor cracks a right on to Mayweather's chin, shuffles and goes forward again but Mayweather sticks him with two wicked body shots. McGregor doesn't look like a novice at all ... until he grabs Mayweather round the waist and the referee pulls them apart.

Gareth on round one: Very smart round by McGregor, excellent attacks, pawing with the left, relaxed and letting his hands go. Showboating for confidence. Floyd can't get in. Score McGregor 10-9

5:18am

Round one

McGregor is immediately on the attack and unleashes a few body shots. Mayweather sits on the ropes and makes his assessment, covering up. McGregor throws out the right jab into Mayweather's head. The undefeated Mayweather starts to respond after 90 seconds but is wary of getting too close to that left hand, playing peek a boo. Mayweather slips a big left but doesn't take any damage bar one uppercut. McGregor towers over Mayweather. McGregor's start was fine. Maywaether did nothing.
5:14am

They're listening to the instructions for the last time

'This will be a clean, professionally fought bout under boxing rules. You hear me says stop and that's what you'll do. Obey my commands at all times. Gentlemen, let's do this.' It's finally on.

And here's Gareth's final take on McGregor

The legion of pugilists swept along on the green flag of the Emerald isle are known as the 'Fighting Irish' for so many reasons, criss-crossing both historical and apocryphal themes, and in Conor McGregor, the Celts have the latest star to emerge in a milieu decorated with fists, scars, and glory. And that torch carries a long history in Ireland and among Irish-Americans.
While stereotypes of the Fighting Irish remain, what cannot be denied is that this Irish fighting spirit was forged through years of strife at home, prejudice abroad, with the populace having overcome, in different eras, famine, discrimination and bitter civil unrest. Even more remarkably, with a population of just 6 million people they have had an impact on the world stage, bringing a lineage of elite-level fist fighters to the fore over hundreds of years, and the creation of folk heroes who have enjoyed success in both professional and amateur rings the world over.
None of it has been lost on McGregor. The warrior spirit within him, he feels deeply in his bloodline.  It is something Conor himself has spoken of poetically, almost like a fighting ballad. “The Irish passion for fighting comes from a long history of battle,” UFC star McGregor explained to me as he began his rise up the rankings. “We have a troubled nation; we fought for our independence, we fought for our freedom. I know my ancestors and my bloodline is on the battlefield; they were doing it riding a horse with a sword, swinging an axe. Now I'm doing the same thing in the Octagon.” And tonight, in the ring, in a few minutes time in Las Vegas, in the Mecca of the greatest modern fight nights, McGregor has an opportunity to display his brilliance.
Look anywhere, historically, and in the 19th century alone Irish soldiers made up a significant body of men joining the British and American armies. Dig a little deeper into the dusty history books, and there was even a contingent of Irish Catholics who fought for the Mexicans in the American-Mexican War in the mid-Nineteenth century, and became known as ‘Los San Patricios’, literally in Spanish, ‘Those of St Patrick’.

Worth recalling, too, that even Muhammad Ali had Irish forebears. Ali's great-grandfather, Abe Grady, was born and had grown up in Ennis Town before he emigrated to America in 1860, where he married an Afro-American woman, an emancipated slave. Ali's mother, Odessa Lee Grady, was Grady's grand-daughter.
UFC President Dana White believes McGregor has emerged as one of the great stars from any era of fighting, and White should know, being from Boston and of Irish descent himself. There is an affinity there, a knowing. You can see White grinning when McGregor makes his verbal and mental assaults on opponents as he hypes his fights before the physical battle begins, the barbs from McGregor interlaced with cutting humour and unadulterated self-belief. What White sees, which we all see, is that the fighting spirit, the absolute comfort in the cool adrenalin of the fight moment, is there, deep, deep in McGregor's DNA.
“Guys in the fight business, real fighters, The Conor McGregors, the Ronda Rouseys, the Jose Aldos, these people are born that way,” explained White to me. "People love the Conor McGregor style. And people either love – or hate – the showman."
“Conor McGregor came into the UFC and showed everybody he's a killer, man. This kid comes to kill you. He comes to take you out, finish you. Conor is not just good at the talking and everything else, he's good at every type of warfare there is in the business. The mental warfare, the physical warfare, the whole thing. He's born to it."
And for one simple reason: Conor McGregor 'The Notorious One', is the latest in the great line of the Fighting Irish. And he will not be denied. Now is the moment of truth.

Back to Davis

Who said it was the body shot prior to the cuff round the back of the head that essentially ended the fight seems bemused that he is being booed after a petulant performance during the bout.
4:47am

And just as I dissed them ...

Gareth has a statement from Showtime:
'Due to high demand, we have reports of scattered outages from various cable and satellite provides and the online offering.  We will delay the start of the main event slightly to allow for systems to get on track.  We do not expect a lengthy delay.' SHOWTIME Sports
4:46am

A word about the schedule

Originally scheduled for 4am BST and then expected to take place at 4.35am, we don't know precisely when the fight will start because of problems with the provision of pay per view services  after one of the major streams crashed. We think they won't let the fight start until it's fixed because they won;t want to refund subscriptions but there is no official announcement or revised timetable so far. Let's face it, it's in no one's interest to be open about it, apart from those of us with a working service who are waiting in the dark...
4:39am

Gervonta Davis

Wins the final undercard fight in the eighth with a knockout but in scrappy fashion with a blow to the back of Fonseca's head, then he pushed him down and cuffed him on the back of the head again. Fonseca wants a victory because of a foul but the referee isn't having it.
4:37am

Stream problems

On the UFC PPV system, which the organisation bragged was a far superior operation to boxing's, have made scores of subscribers furious and there is also a suggestion that it will mean a delay in the main event until it's up again.

Time for Gareth's final pre-fight assessment of Mayweather

It's been a long week (or three) heading into this event, but here's something of a paean to Mayweather. .. he could go to 50-0 but nothing is guaranteed in fight sports.
A paean to Floyd's economic impact on boxing. It's undeniable...
Mayweather has enjoyed sporting success like few before him in boxing and has become the single most powerful figure in earning potential and capacity in sport in this era. Perhaps any era. That earning growth has built simultaneously with his reputation, unbeaten record and the savouring of his skills as his distinctive style has developed over the years.
His impregnability as a boxing master, thus far, and his unparalleled use of social media to underline his brand, has created a marketing tool with many facets at the pinnacle of elite sport for over a decade. Without it, 'Money' Mayweather would never have become so rich, so decorated, such a Colossus in the sporting arena.
Credit: Brandon Magnus/Zuffa LLC
Credit: Brandon Magnus/Zuffa LLC.
But Mayweather's reach has also sustained the entire sport for the last ten years. Riches at the top of a pyramid always filter downwards and for that reason, Mayweather has, in effect, sustained the ebb and flow in elite boxing at so many levels for so long. Streetwise, smart, Mayweather exists as an operator on the factory floor, yet also in the board room.
Measure Mayweather's impact against all others in the sport and he stands alone, unbeaten at 49-0 in the ring across five weight division, yet he also remains peerless as a businessman/boxer. The facts are out there: bare, stark, striking, huge.
In addition to his accomplishments in the ring, Mayweather can claim to be the most lucrative pay-per-view (PPV) attraction of all time. In any sport.
Credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images
Credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images
For example, he led the Forbes and Sports Illustrated lists of the highest-paid athletes of 2012 and 2013 respectively, and the Forbes list again in both 2014 and 2015, listed him as the highest paid athlete in the world.
Over time, Mayweather has generated approximately 19.5 million in PPV buys and 41.3 billion in revenue, surpassing the likes of former top PPV attractions, including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. For a decade, the boxer has brought in a residual earning capacity for the city of Las Vegas which is unlikely ever to be matched. It literally runs into billions and billions of dollars.
Mayweather has been involved in the three biggest pay-per-view boxing events of all time, against Manny Pacquiao, De La Hoya, and Saul Alvarez, with two heavyweight bouts at fourth and fifth, respectively Tyson versus Holyfield, twenty years ago, and Tyson versus Lennox Lewis, fourteen years ago.
The event pitching Mayweather against Filipino Pacquiao two years ago, called the Fight Of The Century, grossed close to a staggering 700 million US dollars, and this fight with Conor McGregor, the Irishman and star of the UFC, now just minutes away, has been trending to usurp that record. Two undeniable forces from the fight sports industry coming together to create the biggest of events.
4:22am

And speaking of the UFC

Its streaming service has crashed, leaving subscribers entirely stranded and, judging by the Twitter trumpet, understandably livid.
