Group holds "1000 Walk for Peace" in Nigeria

A Civil Society group, “The Counsellor Organisation’’ on Thursday held a Peace event in Nigeria tagged 1,000 Walk for Peace to enlighten Nigerians on the need to maintain tolerance, love and peaceful coexistence. Journalists report that the activists, who converged at Ikeja Local Government Secrateriat, trekked through Adeniyi Jones to Ogba and end the walk at Agege Pencima in Lagos State.

Members of the group carried placards with different inscriptions like “give everyone equal rights and Justice, there will be peace’’; and “violence in all its forms has pervasive impact on societies, lets build bridge for peace"

The Convener and Founder of the group, Miss Angela Uyi, called on government at all levels to provide sustainable job opportunity for every citizen in the country.

"I believe peace will reign  supreme if only the leaders will spend more money in preventing crimes and violence than in fighting crimes. There must be end to extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and access to free education should be a must.
Government should build strong institutions, everyone both rich and poor should have access to justice and above all, government should build a socially just and inclusive society for all." She added

She advised the Nigerian people that Change starts with you and not only with the government. Every human on earth—even the most indifferent, laziest person among us—is part of the solution.

She commended President Muhammadu Buhari in his anti-corruption fight and terrorism.

On what the people should do:
The people should take a genuine interest in what the government is doing. Raise awareness in their community about the realities of violence and the importance of peaceful and just societies. As citizen, you must exercise your right to hold your elected officials to account. Exercise your right to freedom of information and share your opinion with your elected representatives. Be the change – promote inclusion and respect towards people of different backgrounds, ethnic origins, religions, gender, sexual orientations or different opinions. Together, we can help to improve conditions for a life of dignity for all.
