What do you think of social media in effecting change for a better society?
I personally believe that social media has changed the society to some extent of the development of technology. We have seen younger generation grow with technology and know what it feels like to be without a cellphone or internet. The world is fast growing and the society is embracing this advancement and there is no sign of slowing it down either. We must also understand the word social media before talking about how it has affect change in the society. Social implies sharing of ideas, opinions, images and other contents.
So much has changed around me. The things I used to know are different from what I know right now all due to the rapid change in the technology. Social media have opened the opportunity for all the writers and bloggers to connect with their tech shrewdness clients to share their expertise and articles. Your audience will further share your articles, blog or expertise in their social circle which further enhance your networks of the followers. You can be anywhere in the world and have a better knowledge of what is happening in other state without moving an inch. That’s why it is generally acceptable that the internet has effectively abridged the world to a global village. Communications have turned the world into a universal village. They have helped man in conquering time and space; nations of the world have come much closer to one another as a result of these wonderful achievements.
I think of course there are also negatives that come with the rise of social media. The anonymity that internet provides gives a lot of people the opportunity to be rude, mean, critique people in a negative and disrespectful way without knowing how it impacts the life of the person they are targeting. There will always be cons to the pros. With this we can lessen any negatives and truly make good use of the positives and enjoy what social media has to offer.
For how long have you been in the social media community?
Well, I have been in the social media since 2010. Before that I spent almost 2 years developing my computer skills.
In the more than half a dozen years of being in social media as an activist, I’m proud to say I’ve grown alongside other social media personalities I’ve been fortunate enough to work with.
What projects/campaign have You created or participated using Social media?
To the glory of God, the first online campaign I created that drew the attention of other was the Protest posters I designed during the Agatu in Benue State and Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani community in Enugu State, where six people were killed with scores wounded and properties destroyed by suspected herdsmen. I got about 376 supporters during the “I stand Against the Fulani Herdsmen Terrorism” and The #Sweat4Peace campaign in collaboration with Galazy For peace which was held on the 21st of September, 2016 during the international peace day. We couldn’t have achieved such result if not for the power of social media. Our last project was the just concluded #OccupyNass2 Unlimited protest. We could boldly conclude that social media helped in giving us the publicity which the event needed and the project has been of our successful project thus far. Our forthcoming project is to Occupy an agency under the presidency which is the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission; The Judiciary, and the Nigerian Police commission among others.
We have a very power project that we are going to launch in the 2017 that will shake any criminal offices in the country.
What role do you think social media will play in the future?
The social media is a revolution. These scientific and technological developments will revolutionize the human life. I can imagine social media starting to penetrate other areas of digital communication. For example, Facebook is already starting to integrate features like Instant Articles, digital assistants, streaming, and even search into its app to prevent users from leaving and using other apps on their mobile devices. Social media will become the most powerful tool to shape public opinion and be an alternative for television as there are more than 2.3 billion active social media users, mostly youngsters, with 89 per cent of youth aged 18-29 active on social media networks. Social media will assist the world in finding solutions to future’s challenges.
