Much can be said for CGI these days, however, some Hollywood actors still believe in the old approach: physically preparing your body for a physically intense role. These actors dedicate time, sweat and tears to getting where they need to be. Much is said for the physical part; however, a lot of mental preparation is needed as well to ensure these guys don’t lose focus.

His fame escalated, and before long, Gerard was starring as Attila the Hun and King Leonidas in the critically acclaimed 300. Olympic lifts and intense training is required to get your physique 300 ready, as well as a commitment of exercising at least 5-6 times a week.

Bulking up for his role as Batman after he toned down for The Machinist took a little more than hard work, it took many hours per day sweating in the gym and a lot of protein, carbs and fat every 2-3 hours a day to ensure he added enough bulk to his weight.

Quite on the opposite side of the spectrum, there is Matthew McConaughey. Dallas Buyers Club saw the golden bronze godlike figure turn into an emaciated and sickly one. Critically acclaimed, Matthew played an AIDS patient and the once buff body would just not have been believable in this role. His next film, Interstellar, sees him as an end of days farmer, back to his former glory. Arguably one of the best poster boys for surfing actors, he credits his time in the water for his Fool’s Gold buff body, sporting not an inch of fat. How many people took up surfing after this was made known is an unknown mystery.

If you have ever watched The Notebook, it’s easy to say that you have witnessed Ryan in one of his best roles. Girls the world over wanted to wait for not just any type of love, but Notebook love. You would think that Ryan was set on route to superstardom just for that role. But no, Crazy Stupid Love proved us wrong. Ryan decided to play a nasty on the girls across the globe, and toned up. Focusing on High Intensity Interval Training, Ryan is able to take his shirt off without sucking in his gut. Best of all, training is only done three days a week.
