An eye-opening video shows exactly what it’s like to land a plane at London City Airport – one of the most challenging in the world.
And the best piece of advice? Make sure you avoid The Shard. And the O2 Arena, and the Tower of London…
The airport is said to be one of the most difficult in the world to land a plane , since pilots are forced to fly over the city and perform a steep descent onto a short runway.
The footage was filmed from the cockpit of an A318 plane – the smallest member of the Airbus family.
It was released by British Airways and shows captain Karen Atherton and senior first officer Paul Riglar making the terrifying descent.
All pilots must go through a rigorous training programme to before they can fly the route, and Captain Atherton is only one of 27 BA pilots qualified to carry out the landing.
Pilots are required to dodge a number of landmarks during their descent, including The Shard – a 95-storey skyscraper in Southwark – and the O2 arena.
