Following the recent news of the
outbreak of the cholera epidemic in Lagos State, we appeal to everyone to take
precautionary measures to avoid contracting this disease.
To this extent, people should watch
out for the source of the water they drink and the environment in which they
buy and eat their daily meals. We should also ensure that we maintain basic
hygienic behavior’s like washing of our hands before and after eating or after
using the restrooms.
Furthermore, please note that flies
can spread cholera. It is important to keep food covered to prevent them from
transmitting cholera. Flies are attracted to garbage and human waste, so keep
garbage far away from food, and cover it all if possible.
However, immediately upon getting symptoms of cholera,
add one teaspoons of salt and 8 teaspoons of sugar to one liter of treated
water and drink it. It is important you start re-hydrating as early as possible.
Continue to drink this preparation throughout the course of the disease.
Coconut juice has very complete electrolytes in it and if available should be
consumed liberally by anyone with cholera symptoms.

Government on the outbreak of the epidemic.
BREAKING NEWS!
Cholera hits Lagos, three dead!
The Lagos State Government has
confirmed the outbreak of Cholera in the state. The State Commissioner for
Health, Dr. Jide Idris who confirmed the development in Lagos last Wednesday
said that out of the 13 cases reported, three persons have died. Worst affected
places are, Ajeromi, Apapa, Lagos Island, Oshodi and Surulere. The commissioner
attributed the epidemic to contaminated wells, local
food and non-washing of hands.
Cholera is an infection of the
small intestine caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The main symptoms are
watery diarrhea and vomiting. Transmission occurs primarily by drinking water
or eating food that has been contaminated by the feces (waste product) of an
infected person, including one with no apparent symptoms. Severe cholera,
requiring hospitalization, results from the accumulation of about a million
bacterial cells within the body. These cells can be picked up from unsafe
drinking water or from eating oysters that have ingested cholera-carrying
zooplankton. The severity of the diarrhea and vomiting can lead to rapid
dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and death in some cases.
The primary treatment is oral
rehydration therapy, typically with oral rehydration solution, to replace water
and electrolytes. If this is not tolerated or does not provide improvement fast
enough, intravenous fluids can also be used. Antibacterial drugs are beneficial
in those with severe disease to shorten its duration and severity.
Gratitude
I want to thank you all
from the deepest place in my heart. Every single day readers are supporting and
encouraging me, telling me that my work is important to their lives too. This
blog started as a hobby, one day almost three years ago when I was bored out of
my skull at a former job, and now it’s changed everything about my life. I
didn’t even know what my aspirations were,
and now I’m in a position to live them out, all because you people share my
work. I owe you everything.
