The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the establishment of two private universities in the country.
They are Edwin Clark University in Delta State and Hezekiah University in Umudi, Imo State.
This was disclosed to State House correspondents by the Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, at the end of the FEC meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to Akwashiki, the establishment of the universities was aimed at meeting the high demand for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
She disclosed that officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) were in attendance to brief the Council on the need for the two universities.
She said: “The Minister of Education tables a memorandum to see the council’s ratification of the President’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional license for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.”
“The establishment of Edwin Clark University will address the inadequate access to university education and enrollment of students in excess of the carrying capacity of the universities. In addition, the establishment of the university will also address the developmental challenges of the Niger Delta in particular and also the wider global community as a whole.”
“After deliberations, the council ratified the President’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional license for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagnodo, Delta State and Hezekiah Umudi, Imo State.”
