Barely 48 hours into the New Year, controversy is once again ‘rocking’ Aso Rock.
A YouTube video suggesting the Presidency recently flew to Kenya with seven private jets has got many chatting on social network already.
The 19-second video clip shows a Kenyan woman (addressing a group of Journalists during a press briefing in Nigeria), mocking President Goodluck Jonathan‘s December 2013 trip to the East African country for its Independence celebration. ‘Your president visited our country with seven private jets and that’s never happened before’, said the Kenyan woman (who is yet to be identified).
Then she went on a satirical rant; ‘We were all excited like ‘this is Nigeria’. It’s the country with the largest number of private jets only. Seven private jets! I know there must be more but for us still that was wow. They came in their own jets, everybody came in their own jets‘.
While social network has got this woman’s comment buzzing with most condemning the Presidency, it is very possible the Presidency had nothing to do with the fleet of jets as it might have belonged to private owners. The celebrations was also attended by a handful of wealthy Nigerian businessmen.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria Reuben Abati has denied the news, clearly stating that woman was lying and should prove her allegation.
‘Tales about Pres. Jonathan travelling to Kenya with 7 jets not true. I challenge the Kenyan lady to prove her allegation. Stop spreading lies‘, @abati1990 announced on Twitter.
That didn’t stop some activists like Japeth Omojuwa and Nasir el-Rufai baring their minds on the issue.
‘GEJ’s Presidential Air Fleet has 10 planes. Arik has 26. Aero -16. Dana – 5. GEJ PAF is our 3rd largest airline in Nigeria. Transformation!! GEJ’s vehicle convoy contains 33 cars. It is the longest convoy in the world and the largest Nigeria has ever seen since 1914. Transformation!‘, el-Rufai wrote on his Twitter.
And when Omojuwa retweeted a comment condemning the alleged accusations, Abati poured out his anger; ‘Pres. Jonathan was in Kenya with only 1 aircraft. Provide concrete evidence to the contrary or shut up‘, Abati wrote to Omojuwa and el-Rufai.
A comment from advertising practitioner Chris Ogunlowo however broadens the situation, explaining that extravagant lifestyle is definitely not an attribute exhibited only by the ‘ogas at the top’.
‘…one will marvel at people’s show of excesses, from clergymen showcasing their fleets of cars and jets, to pop stars outdoing themselves on who-owns-what, and to a random guy in the neighbourhood who’s ‘oppressing’ everyone with his new stuff‘.
So many things you don't know about your country Nigeria.
